Equity In Graduate Admissions Workshop
FUNDAMENTALS: EQUITY IN GRADUATE ADMISSIONS
This session presents data and research about the role of typical admissions criteria and practices in influencing inequities in graduate education. Considerations associated with COVID-19 and the current movement for racial justice will also be addressed. Practical strategies for rethinking typical admissions criteria and processes are introduced, with a focus on equity-based holistic review and embedding attention to equity throughout the admissions and recruitment process. Participants will learn how common admissions mindsets & practices tend to inhibit access for underrepresented groups, and they will be introduced to strategies to improve diversity & equity through holistic review processes.
FACILITATORS:
Dr. Julie Posselt & Dr. Casey Miller are the leading scholars of graduate admissions, nationally. They are founding PI’s of the California Consortium for Inclusive Doctoral Education (C-CIDE). Posselt is an educational sociologist, and author of Inside Graduate Admissions: Merit, Diversity, and Faculty Gatekeeping. Miller is an experimental physicist and PI of an NSF-funded project to develop and deploy holistic admissions tools in STEM PhD programs.
