The UCI Department of Chemistry is home to world-class faculty who engage in cutting edge research in diverse areas of chemistry, from atmospheric chemistry, to drug development and the biochemistry of cancer, to the development of new solar cell materials.

Department of Earth System Science
The UCI Department of Earth System Science (ESS) was the first in the nation established to quantify changes to our environment and discover ways we can adapt. Research in ESS focuses on how the atmosphere, land and oceans interact as a system and how the Earth will change over a human lifetime. ESS faculty research interests vary widely from climate, atmospheric chemistry, and biogeochemistry to oceanography and hydrology. The department ranks among the top in U.S. universities for the impact of its publications in geosciences. In addition to their research, faculty work to inform and educate policy makers and the community at large on a range of issues affecting the environment and quality of life.

Department of Mathematics
The power of mathematics can be felt in every discipline of science and engineering as well as in everyday life. The UCI Department of Mathematics is committed to excellence in research and education. The faculty of the Department of Mathematics are prominent scholars engaged in teaching, fundamental research in both pure and applied mathematics, and service to the local community with outreach efforts to foster success in STEM disciplines. Faculty conduct research in various fields of mathematics and its applications and have garnered numerous distinguished awards and national recognition for their excellent scholarly production.

Department of Physics & Astronomy
Physics lies at the forefront of our understanding of nature. It includes the study of the universe on the largest scales — astronomy and cosmology, and on the smallest —the physics of quarks and leptons. In addition, physics provides the background for high-technology; lasers, nuclear power, semiconductors, and medical imaging, all have their roots in physics. At the UCI Department of Physics & Astronomy, world-renowned physicists study exciting topics like quantum mechanics, gravitation, the big bang, black holes, magnetism, and superconductivity.
