Professor Randerson's research focuses on understanding global change and disturbance dynamics in terrestrial ecosystems. He uses remote sensing data, carbon dioxide observations and Earth system models to study interactions between human activity, ecosystem processes and climate.

Randerson studies climate change, and also wildfires. “I am currently working on a proposal for NASA to build a constellation of cubesats to detect wildfires and measure their rate of spread,” said Randerson. The work could help save lives, he explained.
