P/NP POLICY CHANGES and FAQs FOR WINTER 2021 QUARTER:
Physical Sciences Add/Drop/Change policy can be found here, with the exception of allowances for several writing courses which have been approved by the academic senate as outlined here. For Winter 2021, grading status can only be changed through the tenth week of instruction: March 12.

P/NP POLICY CHANGES and FAQs FOR FALL 2020 QUARTER:
The UCI Academic Senate, which governs academic regulations at UC Irvine, has authorized adjustments to existing undergraduate regulations on Pass/Not Pass grades (P/NP) for the Fall 2020 quarter, as follows:
- All undergraduate courses will offer P/NP grading as an option. It is the student's choice as to whether they wish to take the course for letter grade or P/NP.
- Academic deans and departments are encouraged, but not required, to allow courses taken P/NP to fulfill school and major requirements. (Physical Sciences majors, including majors in Environmental Science and Policy, MUST take all degree-required courses for a LETTER GRADE and not for Pass/Not Pass. Note: this is a change from Spring 2020 and Summer 2020 and may not be true for other majors on campus.)
- Students will be able to change their grade option, both letter grade to P/NP and P/NP to letter grade, through November 25 (before 5PM)--in accordance with the office of the Associate Dean for the school/program.
- Courses taken P/NP will not count toward the 12-unit overall graduation cap on these courses.
- Students on academic probation may enroll in courses with the P/NP option in the Fall 2020 term, as long as those courses are NOT required for the degree (see above).
- Courses to complete General Education Category I: Writing must be completed with a grade of "C" or better ("P" for pass, if taking it for P/NP)
*** The UCI Registrar's office has compiled many pertinent FAQs to help students decide if taking a course, or courses, for P/NP is a wise decision. Please carefully read all of the FAQs here: https://www.reg.uci.edu/addl/faq_covid.html. ***
Students working to change their major into Physical Sciences must take requirements (listed here) for a letter grade.
Physical Sciences majors on academic probation will be required to earn at least a 2.000 GPA in all courses taken for a letter grade.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT:
- To receive a "P" for Pass and to get credit/units, you must earn a grade of "C" or better. However, if a course is taken for a letter grade, the minimum grade needed for credit would be at least a "D-." This is especially important to note for graduating students, who are trying to fulfill their last requirements to graduate.
- Writing courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better ("P" for pass, if taking it for P/NP)
- If you are retaking a course that was originally for a LETTER GRADE, you must retake the course for a LETTER GRADE ONLY, no exceptions.
- P/NP courses will not affect your GPA, including your Major GPA. If your (Major) GPA is below 2.000, getting a P will not raise your (Major) GPA.
- Graduate/Medical/Professional school programs make their own determination as to how they assess courses taken P/NP; this is not a question we can answer for you. You will need to check with those programs directly.
Physical Sciences majors, who still have questions after carefully reading the above policy change and the Registrar's FAQs, can contact Physical Sciences Student Affairs for more information: https://ps.uci.edu/stuaff/.

P/NP POLICY CHANGES and FAQs FOR SPRING 2020 AND SUMMER 2020 QUARTERS:
The UCI Academic Senate, which governs academic regulations at UC Irvine, has authorized adjustments to existing undergraduate regulations on Pass/Not Pass grades (P/NP) for the Spring 2020 quarter and the Summer 2020 term, as follows:
- All undergraduate courses will offer P/NP grading as an option. It is the student's choice as to whether they wish to take the course for letter grade or P/NP.
- Academic deans and departments are encouraged, but not required, to allow courses taken P/NP to fulfill school and major requirements. (Physical Sciences will support student requests thru Week 10, as best we can.)
- Students will be able to change their grade option, both letter grade to P/NP and P/NP to letter grade through the end of the 10th week (before 5PM)--in accordance with the office of the Associate Dean for the school/program. (Summer Session calendar: https://summer.uci.edu/calendar/)
- Courses taken P/NP will not count toward the 12-unit overall graduation cap on these courses.
- Students on academic probation may enroll in courses with the P/NP option in the Spring 2020 or Summer 2020 terms.

Normally, students working to change their major into Physical Sciences must take requirements (listed here) for a letter grade. The above policy allows students, working on a change of major into Physical Sciences, to choose P/NP (in Spring 2020 or Summer 2020) for courses to meet the published change of major criteria.
Physical Sciences majors on academic probation will be required to earn at least a 2.000 GPA in all courses taken for a letter grade.

ENROLLMENT
**DROP: The deadline to drop courses in the School of Physical Sciences is the end of Week 2 by 5:00PM. Drops can be made in WebReg.
**CHANGE: The deadline to change grade option or variable units is the end of Week 2 by 5:00PM. Changes can be made in WebReg.
**ADD: The deadline to add courses in the School of Physical Sciences is the end of Week 2 by 5:00PM. Adds can be made in WebReg.
An online petition will be used for adds, drops, and changes after the listed enrollment deadlines have passed. Log into STUDENT ACCESS to submit an enrollment exception request. Requests to change the grade option for a course are never approved after Week 6 (this applies to all majors in the School of Physical Sciences). Late enrollment exceptions requests are not typically considered except in cases of a documented emergency beyond the control of the student.
**(Some departments within the School of Physical Sciences have deadlines earlier than those for the School. Please see the comments in the SOC for details)
Math – RH 340
Chem – email undergrad@chem.uci.edu
ESS – CH 3200 B
Physics – FRH 4109
For all classes at UCI, you may repeat only if your most recent grade was C- or below.
For the first 16 units you repeat, the new grade replaces the old grade in the calculation of your GPA(even if the new grade is lower). The old grade still shows up on your UCI transcript, but it no longer affects your UC GPA. After the first 16 units of repeat, both grades are averaged.
Many classes restrict repeating students from enrolling until later in the registration period. Some classes will require you wait until Open Enrollment to enroll as repeat, some will make you wait until the first day of class before you can enroll; check the SOC comments for details about the department repeat policy.
You need the Instructor’s Permission to Enroll form, in this situation. Print this form and bring it to your Instructor. Once it is signed, bring it to the enrollment office for the class.
Math – RH 340
Chem – NS2 1101
ESS – CH 3200 B

Yes. Physical Sciences majors can take courses off-campus, even degree required courses, except for lower- and upper- division writing. To help you find appropriate classes, please come visit our office (RH 134) and use www.assist.org.
Some Schools on campus do not allow their majors to take classes off-campus. It's always a good idea to check with your Counseling office if you are not a Physical Sciences student, or if you are a double major.
You may take an average of one per quarter, by the time you graduate. Classes offered as "P/NP Only" do not count toward this limit.
Yes, but only if the class is being used for your GE requirements. You cannot take major classes as P/NP unless they are offered as P/NP Only.
Enrolling in more than 18 units requires permission from the Student Affairs office and is normally allowed only in special circumstances by students who have proved that they can handle the rigorous course load. Visit our office in RH 134 to request an exception.
**For all undergrads, the Registrar's office raises the 18 unit cap to 20 units. Check the Registrar's Calendar for the specific date when this happens.
You might qualify to be a part-time student (if you work 25+ hours per week, have family obligations, or health issues). You should speak with us about this. Please come in to RH 134.
Attend class starting on the first day of instruction (for Math classes, also get on the ACCESS waiting list as soon as possible, available in RH 340, and go to this website). Let the Instructor know that you are trying to enroll thru ACCESS UCI, be sure they put you on the email list, so you get important class announcements. Bring the ACCESS UCI Enrollment Form to the department office at the appropriate time (2nd week for Math classes, 2nd Thursday for Physics classes, first day for ESS classes, first day for Chem classes). If there is sufficient space in the class, the department will sign your form. Take it to UCI Extension, pay the fee and you're enrolled!
Every quarter, the Physical Sciences Academic Counselors, Associate Dean and Faculty Advisor for each department review files for students with low cumulative or quarterly GPAs. All students are reviewed individually and all decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. Students are either placed on Academic Probation (see below) and/or are warned that they are Subject to Disqualification (see below). The School of Physical Sciences does not currently have an appeal process, all decisions by the Associate Dean are final. If your cumulative GPA or your quarterly GPA ever fall below 2.0, you are strongly encouraged to come in to the Physical Sciences Student Affairs office and speak with an Academic Counselor (RH 134, 949-824-6507, pssazot@uci.edu). We understand that there are many factors that could be affecting you and your academic performance, please contact us right away so we can help you get off of probation.

- Low quarterly GPA: your grade point average for the preceding quarter is below a "C" average (2.0).
- Low cumulative GPA: your overall University of California GPA is below 2.0, the total GPA in your major is below 2.0, or the upper-division GPA in your major is below 2.0.
- Lack of normal progress: you successfully completed fewer than twelve (12) units the preceding quarter or you are not making steady progress toward completing the required courses in your major.
To get off of Academic Probation you must meet all of the following requirements:
- Take at least twelve (12) units per quarter.
- Take ALL classes for a letter grade, unless the course is only offered on a Pass/Not Pass basis.

‘NR’ stands for No Report. You were not assigned a grade for this course. You should contact your Instructor right away. An ‘NR’ turns into an ‘F’ after one quarter. (http://www.reg.uci.edu/grades/gradingpolicy.html)
‘W’ grades are assigned for any drop approved after Week 6. It stands for Withdrawal. ‘W’ grades do not affect your GPA.

Yes, but only if the class is being used for your GE requirements. You cannot take major classes as P/NP unless they are offered as P/NP Only.
D- and above is passing, for all classes on campus, except for writing classes*. Certain classes, however, require a minimum grade in a previous course as a prerequisite, such as many Chemistry or Biology sequence courses (which require a C- or better in the previous course before you can continue onto the next course in the sequence).
*Most writing classes require at least a 'C' or better to be considered a passing grade.

Maybe. For most minors, just take all of the right courses (requirements in the General Catalogue) and you get the minor upon graduation (which you indicate to us when you file a graduation application). Some minors, however, such as Education, Management, and Accounting, require students to apply for the minor in advance.
You should speak with an Academic Counselor or Peer Advisor in the student affairs office for the School you are trying to change to. Then, you apply online thru Student Access.
