Interim Dean Burke joined UC Irvine in 2006 and has joint appointments in the Department of Chemistry and Department of Physics & Astronomy. He currently serves as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the School of Physical Sciences and brings a wealth of leadership experience and scholarly distinction to the role of Interim Dean.
An internationally recognized expert in theoretical and computational chemistry, Interim Dean Burke’s research focuses on density functional theory (DFT), a cornerstone of modern quantum chemistry and materials science. His work has been widely cited and has significantly influenced the development of electronic structure methods. He has received numerous honors, including election to the American Association for Advancement of Science and the British Royal Society of Chemistry, fellowships from the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Bourke Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Interim Dean Burke has also contributed extensively to academic service, including advisory positions with national and international research institutes, and leadership in organizing major scientific conferences and workshops. His commitment to education is reflected in his innovative teaching and curriculum development, including the creation of globally used online resources in DFT.
