Flu Vaccination Now Mandatory for All UCI Employees

Dear colleagues:

Your wellbeing is our top priority, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of the Working Well™ program that has been developed to help keep you and your colleagues well, and in accordance with President Napolitano’s Executive Order dated July 31, 2020, being vaccinated for the 2020-2021 flu season is now mandatory for all UCI employees.

Effective Sunday, November 1, 2020, UCI employees (staff, faculty and other academic appointees) who have not received the 2020-2021 flu vaccine, a medical exemption, religious accommodation, or disability accommodation, will not be permitted to work on-site or visit any UC or UCI controlled property.

The President’s Executive Order is intended to reduce the potential strain on our medical centers from an influx of influenza cases amid an active COVID-19 pandemic. COMPLIANCE WITH FLU VACCINATION REQUIREMENT FOR CAMPUS (IRVINE) EMPLOYEES

On Wednesday, September 23, 2020, campus employees, including Health Sciences and School of Medicine (SOM) employees based in Irvine, will receive an email asking them to confirm one of the following: 1) they have received the 2020-2021 flu vaccination; 2) indicate their intention to receive the vaccine by October 31, 2020; or 3) request a medical exemption, religious accommodation, or disability accommodation.

Once an employee confirms that they have been vaccinated, they will receive a confirmation email. Employees who have yet to be vaccinated but indicate their intent to be vaccinated will receive reminder emails weekly through October 31. Employees requesting an exemption or accommodation will receive follow-up through the appropriate exemption or accommodation review process.

COMPLIANCE WITH FLU VACCINATION REQUIREMENT FOR ORANGE AND AMBULATORY LOCATION EMPLOYEES

UCI Health, ambulatory, and School of Medicine (SOM) employees who work at our Orange campus and/or ambulatory healthcare locations should follow flu vaccination protocols for UCI Health.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T RECEIVE THE 2020-2021 FLU VACCINE BY NOVEMBER 1?

You will not be permitted to access or work at any location owned, operated or otherwise controlled by UCI or the University of California.

DO TELECOMMUTING EMPLOYEES NEED TO PARTICIPATE?

Employees who are working remotely (telecommuting) must receive the 2020-2021 flu vaccine. If you have not received your flu vaccination and are telecommuting, you will be able to continue to work remotely. However, should you need to visit or work at any UCI or University of California site, you will not be permitted to do so without complying with the flu vaccination mandate.
