Event Details

The 2025 Vera Rubin Quarter is the 18th coin in the American Women Quarters™ Program. Vera Rubin was a trailblazing American astronomer whose groundbreaking research provided crucial evidence for the existence of dark matter. Join us to learn more about the American Women Quarters program and the life and work of Vera Rubin.

The event will take place in-person in SBSG 1517 and via Zoom. In person space is limited, registration is required. Thanks to the generosity of the U.S. Mint, the first 50 in-person registrants will receive a 2025 Vera Rubin Quarter in a commemorative coin board.

This is the fourth event in a series of events sponsored by the School of Social Sciences at UC Irvine in recognition of the American Women Quarters program and the impactful women it honors. Prior events can be viewed here: Anna May Wong Quarter, Patsy Takemoto Mink Quarter and Celia Cruz Quarter.

Featured panelists include:

  • Christina Hess: Award-winning illustrator and designer of the 2025 Vera Rubin Quarter.
  • Jacqueline Mitton: Distinguished British astronomer, writer, and co-author of Vera Rubin: A Life.
  • Karl Rubin: Distinguished Professor and Thorp Chair of Mathematics Emeritus at UC Irvine.
  • Bill Maurer: Dean of the School of Social Sciences at UC Irvine, facilitating the discussion.
