1. Hardware requirements:

The installation will warn you or notify you if you are attempting to
install ISIS 2.1.2 onto a computer that does not meet the minimum
hardware configuration. The following table describes the hardware
configuration for successfully running ISIS and MDL ISIS applications.

- A Macintosh with a 68030 microprocessor or higher
- System 7.0 or higher
- 16 to 18 Mb of free hard-disk space for ISIS 2.1.x (68K)
- 16 to 19 Mb of free hard-disk space for ISIS 2.1.x (PowerPC)
- At least 10 Mb of RAM
- PostScript printer
- Apple LaserWriter 8.2 printer driver or later (8.3 preferred)

2. Installation

a. Mount the shared directory "ISIS 2.1.2 Install":

- Open the Chooser (under the apple menu)
- Highlight "AppleShare"
- Choose the "model-Ethertalk" Zone
( if you don't see zones, you need to change from LocalTalk to EtherTalk using the Control Panel "TCP/IP" or "MacTCP")
- Choose the computer "Modeling Facility's G3".
- Enter Name: model Password: modfac
- Select the volume "ISIS 2.1.2 Install" under the Utilities/ISIS 2.1.2 Installer folder. Open that volume.
**
Make sure it is NOT set for automatic opening on startup. (Don't put an "X" in the box!!)**
If you are unable to mount the shared directory "ISIS 2.1.2 Install"", please tell HiYoung! (x1204)

b. Install the Isis software

- Double click on "ISIS 2.1.2 Installer".
- As the menus appear, click "continue" or OK till you get to the choice of items to install.
- Highlight "ISIS/Developer" and click "install". Install in a folder called ISIS 2.1.2.
- If you are asked, DO replace "ISISBaseLib" in your system extensions.
- Copy the IRDAS folder from ISIS 2.1.2 Installer to your new ISIS 2.1.2 folder.
- Choose ISIS/Base from inside your folder and choose "get Info" from the File menu. Change the "Preferred Memory" to 8 MB or even more!!.
- Make aliases for ISIS/Draw and IRDAS 1.3.2 (Inside the IRDAS folder) and put them in the Apple menu or other convenient location.
- Throw away any folders containing old versions if ISIS and throw away old aliases.
After installation, test ISIS/Base and your IRDAS settings by double clicking on IRDAS 1.3.2 . It should only ask you for login information (see below).
Login: mdl
Password: isis 21
You will need to give the password everytime you use ISIS/Base with IRDAS.

For brief operating instructions, see the
instruction sheet link.

- For features and details, refer to the extensive online help. See me (HiYoung Yoo, x1204) if you can't do a specific type of search-- I will help you figure it out.

Getting Help:

There are no printed manuals.
Online help is easy to use and extensive. You can run it concurrently with the ISIS applications.

If you and I are not able to figure out how to do a type of search or use a given feature, we have phone support from MDL available. Please do not contact them directly; let me do it so that I can save wasted queries and be able to answer future ones.

Notes on Databases:

We have the following databases:

Orgsyn-- up to date-- online versions of Organic Syntheses.

CSM-- up to date-- "Current Synthetic Methodology"-- MDL's in-house database.

Reflib-- through 1991. Includes Theilheimer, Chiras, and Metalysis, and the "core" database (whatever that is), 170,000 reactions in all.

Other databases are not free. Please tell me if you notice serious gaps in our databases-- perhaps we can plan to purchase some more databases on grants.

The default is to search all the databases. You can choose a subset of the databases to search.
