Visitor Night at the UCI Observatory

Come see Jupiter, Venus, Mars, the Orion Nebula, the M3 globular cluster, the M44/Praesepe open cluster and other star clusters with our telescopes. Learn to locate your favorite constellation, tour the Observatory dome and see a slide show about the small bodies of our own Solar System.

The event will feature a lecture by professor Tyler Nordgren: "Astronomy in the National Parks."

Visitor Nights are open to the general public so please feel free to forward this message along to friends and neighbors who may be interested. Visitor Nights are free of charge, and no reservations are required. They are fun for the entire family -- children, teens, parents and grandparents, but remember to dress warmly and bring along flashlights.

We heartily encourage amateur astronomers to bring along their own telescopes to share with our visitors. The Observatory is located on the campus of the University of California, Irvine. To obtain a map and driving directions, please see our website at

Visitors should park in the nearest parking lot, which is Lot G at the corner of Gabriellino and E. Peltason (a $5 parking fee must be paid at the lot entrance), and walk up Gabriellino Drive. At the top of the hill, turn left and follow the gravel road to the dome.  If you are bringing telescope equipment or a handicapped person, you will be permitted to drive directly out to the Observatory dome.

In the unlikely event of rain, Visitor Night may be canceled, but a cancellation notice will be posted on our website by 3 pm that day. If it is cloudy, Visitor Night still will go on and you can tour the Observatory and see the slide show.
