Dr. Michl Binderbauer is a co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Tri Alpha Energy, a late nineties spin-off from UC Irvine that is focused on developing novel science and technology for nuclear fusion based power generation. He is the architect of Tri Alpha’s research and development program and a co-inventor of many of the company’s technological advancements.
Dr. Binderbauer has dedicated the past two decades to evolving TAE’s knowledge and technology. He is an expert in reactor kinetics, equilibrium, and stability of advanced beam-driven Field-Reversed Configurations and aneutronic fusion systems. He has focused on reactor physics, engineering and enabling technologies, as well as a wide array of applications of TAE’s core technologies outside the energy field — from medicine, non-destructive testing, to isotope production and chemical processing. He holds more than 40 U.S. and international technology patents, and has authored or co-authored many peer-reviewed publications in the areas of plasma physics, particle beam technologies and fusion.
Dr. Binderbauer graduated Summa Cum Laude and as the Outstanding Senior with a B.S. degree in physics from UCI in 1991. He continued his studies at UCI and received his Masters and Ph.D. degrees under the guidance of Norman Rostoker, a pioneer in nuclear fusion research. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the American Physical Society. For his work at TAE he was recognized as one of Orange County’s most influential in 2015 and TAE’s research has been widely covered by Science, Time, The New York Times, MIT Tech Review and others.
