Hongkai Zhao is Chancellor’s Professor in the Department of Mathematics with a joint appointment in the Department of Computer Science at UCI. He received his B. S. from Peking University in 1990 and his Ph. D from UCLA in 1996. He was Gabor Szego Assistant Professor at Stanford University before he joined UCI in 1999.
Professor Zhao works in computational and applied mathematics that aims to understand and solve problems from science and engineering. His research includes developing and analyzing computer algorithms with applications to physical problems, medical and seismic imaging, computer vision and image processing.
Professor Zhao has received an Alfred Sloan Fellowship, Feng Kang Prize in Scientific Computing, and the School of Physical Sciences Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education.
