Ralph J. Cicerone is the President of the National Academy of Sciences and Chair of the National Research Council. He joined the University of California, Irvine in 1989, where he was founding chair of the Department of Earth System Science. From 1994 to 1998, Dr. Cicerone served as Dean of the School of Physical Sciences. As Dean, he successfully recruited exceptional faculty and strengthened the school’s curriculum and outreach programs. Before his election to his current position as Academy President, Dr. Cicerone served as Chancellor of UC Irvine form 1998 to 2005. It is no coincidence that within this period, UC Irvine experienced campus wide academic growth and development.
The primary funding priority for the Department of Earth System Science is to raise funds for the Ralph J. and Carol M. Cicerone Endowed Chair and Fellowship Fund. With generous donations from Ralph J. and Carol M. Cicerone, Kingsley and John V. Croul, and the Jenkins Family the department is approximately half way to the $2 million fundraising goal.
