We hosted a workshop covering the topic of earthquake hazards and scenarios for damage reduction.
Most of the recent destructive earthquakes occurred in areas where high seismic risks had not been assigned by authorities.  This workshop reviewed the limited understanding of seismic risks and damage estimates, which is intrinsic prior to events, and explore scenarios for earthquake hazard mitigation practice.

Topics included:
• Observed peak ground motions of recent earthquakes far exceeded predicted hazard risks
• Simulation of strong ground motion & uncertainties of structural design
• Soil resistance and pile foundation reinforcement effects
• Base isolation systems for earthquake safety
• Seismic designs & analysis of structural systems for earthquake damage reduction
• What does “Earthquake Early Warning” provide?
• Public health approach to reducing earthquake risk.
