Responsible for the design, maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration of electronics equipment used in scientific laboratories on campus.  Design work encompasses all disciplines of electronics, including digital, analog, RF, high voltage, PC interfacing, etc.  Design and construct electronic instrumentation from rough sketches with scientists.  Assist and advise students and faculty with their research equipment and software.  Responsible for the management and operation of the department Electronics Shop.  Supervise technicians and assign day to day tasks.  Evolve and maintain inventory of electronic components.  Maintain technical files and financial records.

Hardware design, development and high volume production support responsibilities for Unit’s gas flow digital metering and control devices.  Introduced several new product lines from design through manufacturing.  Rewrote company’s firmware in C for portability.  Win 95/98/NT/2k environment.

1988 - 1996 Development Engineer Univ of California - Irvine, Dept. of Anatomy & Neurobiology

Designed and constructed several DSP-based medical acoustics digital stimulus generation/data acquisition systems for auditory physiology research.  Wrote a large body of MacOS software for scientific analysis.  Provided technical resources to faculty investigators, assisted academic animal research, and supported instrumentation for two campus research laboratories.  Supervised periodic student help.

Designed and constructed a medical ultrasonics digital acquisition system for PCs.  Wrote 2D and 3D scientific graphics, graphical user interface for DOS, and signal analysis software.  Supported faculty and student research into quantitative ultrasound methods.

1984 - 1986  Development Engineer  University of California - Santa Barbara, Dept. of Physics

Designed and supervised construction of an undersea computer system and its high speed interface to a surface computer.  Wrote embedded system software.  Designed and supervised construction of numerous small electronic instruments for university research.  Responsible for all campus electronic instrument repair.  Unix & DOS environment.

Provided hardware design, test engineering, and national field service for a medical digital image processing system.  Supervised two technicians.  DEC PDP-11 environment.

Designed electrical power and lighting systems for hospitals, gov't, and commercial buildings.  EIT registration.
