LEAPS – Laboratory Experiments and Activities in the Physical Sciences – is an outreach program run by the School of Physical Sciences, with funding from the National Science Foundation, that brings local middle school students to the UCI campus. LEAPS offers students from nearby middle schools a “Day at College” experience and increases their awareness and understanding of chemistry, physics, and earth system science. During their visit, the students are broken up into smaller groups (10-12 students/group) and spend two one-hour sessions in active research labs doing hands-on science activities with UCI faculty and students. The students also have lunch on campus at the freshman dormitory commons.
Since inception in 2012, the School has hosted six events where 40-70 eighth grade students come to campus for each event. If your school is interested in participating in LEAPS, please contact Lori Greene: firstname.lastname@example.org
