The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s most powerful particle accelerator. Built in Switzerland at CERN, the European laboratory for particle physics research, the LHC seeks to recreate conditions just a fraction of a second after the Big Bang by smashing subatomic particles together, at very high energies, around a 17-mile...
The 2010 Fall Meeting of the Mathematical Association of America Southern California-Nevada Section will be held Saturday, October 16, at the University of California - Irvine.

Students are encouraged to ask questions, not only of their mentor, but also from our community of alumni representing various career fields.
Join us for this informal gathering of mentors and students to celebrate the completion of another successful year of the Physical Sciences Mentor Program. This is the chance to gather casually, say thank you, and discuss future plans while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow students and alumni.
In inverse problems, one attempts to determine the internal properties of a medium by observing the response outside the medium to different waves sent through that medium. This is how we obtain a large part of our information about the world. Human vision, for example, is derived from the measurements of scattered light that reach our retinas;...
Fireflies and glowing sea creatures have captivated humans for centuries. These organisms use chemical reactions to produce “cold” light in a process known generally as bioluminescence. In recent years, bioluminescent light sources have been introduced into a variety of non-luminescent cell types, enabling the location and movements...
