Jose joined the Cal Teach staff in October of 2007, after working at UC Berkeley for close to five years. His work experience includes four years with the Cal Corps Public Service Center as a Program Coordinator, three years with Destination: College AmeriCorps as Recruitment and Training Coordinator, and Coordinator and Summer Academy Director for the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA). Previous to working at Cal he served as an Academic Advisor for the LULAC National Educational Service Center in San Francisco, conducting outreach with high school and community college students. He oversees advising and support services offered through Cal Teach’s Resource & Advising Center. |

Carlos graduated from UCI in 2004 with a Biological Sciences degree and a minor in Education. His work experience includes 9 years at UCI. He has served several outreach programs at UCI such as CAMP, COSMOS, SAM, CTFMS, and MATHCOUNTS as well as held Undergraduate Affairs and Graduate Affairs positions in the departments of Mathematics and Neurobiology & Behavior, respectively. Dr. Terry Shanahan

Dr. Terry Shanahan started her 22-year science education career teaching high school Chemistry and Physics in Southern California. She has served as a Co-Director of the California Science Project at Irvine since 1999 and has developed curriculum for PreK to grade 5 since 2000 using 5E lesson design with a special focus on English Learner strategies. Most recently she was the Elementary Teacher Leader Co-Director in Science for the UC Irvine National Science Foundation grant, FOCUS!. She has taught fieldwork seminar courses at UCI since 2000. Her doctoral dissertation was entitled “A Comparison Of Graphic And Visual Test Accommodations In Measuring Urban Fifth-Grade English Language Learners’ Science Content Acquisition”. Her research interests are preschool science instruction, assessment, and how English Learners communicate conceptual understanding. |
Karajean Hyde

Karajean has been teaching undergraduate math and science teacher preparation courses at UCI for the past 6 years. She also currently serves as the co-director of the Irvine Math Project, providing professional development to current K-12 teachers. Karajean enjoys working with credential or 1st year teachers as well, as she is able to observe and assist them in their classrooms. Before coming to UCI, Karajean was a Santa Ana Middle School Math teacher for 8 years. She finds great reward in working with and helping students and teachers see that math is not only fun, but can make sense too! For Cal-Teach, Karajean co-instructs the seminars with Terry and arranges fieldwork placements in local, public schools. |
